Overview
A percussion teacher built a statewide curriculum out of paint buckets. Then he lost the two rooms he taught in.
When a transformative percussion teacher is abruptly forced into retirement and faces a profound spiritual crisis, he must reevaluate his legacy to continue teaching.
Floyd Kennedy spent decades teaching students life skills through drumming. From paint buckets and boards, he transformed the drumline at historically under-resourced Natomas High School into a nationally recognized program. In 2018, the structure and curriculum he developed were adopted by the California Department of Education and made available statewide.
Rhythm also features Isaiah, one of Floyd’s former students and now a parent. Twenty years after Floyd’s mentorship, Isaiah is a professional drummer and a father himself. Through Floyd’s story, the film shows how one consistent adult mentor and one accessible arts program can shape belonging, discipline, confidence, and long-term student success.
The film was made over three years. It was shortlisted for the Young Director Award, and distribution with wide-reaching national non-profits is in development. A private screener is available on request.
